Preservatives have fans and enemies. Do they cause cancer? Well, just about anything on this planet has the potential to cause cancer. There are more bacteria than there are human cells, and bacteria/microbes/mold/fungus in your skin care products can cause serious skin conditions and even disfiguration. What can make products safe to use? What can make products last for 6/12/24 months? Preservatives. Are ‘natural’ preservatives better or worse? Generally they use the same preservatives in hair products as they do skin products. Most ingredients in these products are natural..so carbon-rich and therefore great food for bacteria etc.. tho not necessarily organic nor non-GMO – it just depends on the marketing hype of the brand. Natural preservatives are strong aromatic extracts like citrus,menthol,eucalyptus,ginger,rosemary etc, and can be very irritating on skin or scalp.
