So is SLS (Sodium laurel / lauryl sulfate) harmful, or not?
It’s in tons of popular and common health and beauty products; I saw a toothpaste that said: SLS free in bold lettering across the top, so I found out that:
* Sodium laurel or lauryl sulfate (SLS), also known as sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)– Found in car washes, engine degreasers, garage floor cleaners… and in over 90% of personal care products! SLS breaks down the skin’s moisture barrier, easily penetrates the skin, and allows other chemicals to easily penetrate. Combined with other chemicals, SLS becomes a “nitrosamine”, a potent class of carcinogen. It can also cause hair loss. SLES is sometimes disguised with the labeling “comes from coconut” or “coconut-derived”…
So, what up with that?
I don’t know much about it. But your question certainly high lights a pressing issue:
Do we let the government tell us what to buy and sell?
Or would we be much better served by:
– people like yourself,
– presenting questionable products
– to independent labs for analysis
– whose results are publicized and
– made available at the points of sale of these products?
Laws are so easily abused. Knowledge is far more accurately governed by the individual who possesses it.
